Florence Nightingale is best known for her radical innovations in nursing care. She was a pioneer in nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods. For most of her life, Florence pushed for reform of the British military health-care system. With that, the nursing profession started gaining the respect it deserved. Besides being a nurse and reformer, Florence Nightingale was a statistician. She would use new techniques of statistical analysis and apply them to her life's work, such as during the Crimean War when she documented the occurrence of preventable deaths in the military. She developed the "polar-area diagram" to dramatize the preventable deaths caused by unsanitary conditions. With her analysis, Florence Nightingale revolutionized the idea that social dilemmas could be objectively measured and subjected to mathematical analysis. She was an innovator in the collection, formulation, and graphical display of statistics. The achievements set forth by Florence Nightingale were amazing considering most Victorian women did not attend universities or pursue professional careers. Her reform efforts occurred in part because she was frustrated with the conditions in England that limited women's life choices to marriage, indolence, or servitude. Her frustration's extended also to the social conditions of most of England's citizens: abject poverty or affluence. Born in Florence, Italy on May 12, 1820, in the Villa Colombia, near Porta Romana, Florence was named after the city she was born in. After her birth, the Nightingale family moved to England and settled down in her fathers inherited estate. Although later, her father William Edward Nightingale had a house built for the family in the village of Lea. The house was called the Lea Hurst and served as the summer home to the Nightingale family for the rest of Florence Nightingale's life. In 1825, the Nightingale family moved to a mansion named Embly Park in the Parish...

Food Stamps The government of the United States is equipped with myriad forms of public assistance programs that come in aid to the less fortunate part of the population. The federal state and local governments provide numerous programs designed to help low-income citizens and their families meet nutritional and health needs. The food stamp program is one of many nutrition programs available to the public and the most significant food plan on hand. The Food Stamp Program is the basis of the Federal food assistance programs, and provides crucial support to needy households and to those making the transition from welfare to work programs. It provides low-income households electronic benefits in order for them to increase their food purchasing power. The Food Stamp program was created in 1939 during the Big Depression period and served then for the same purposes it does today. The program became legitimately permanent in 1964. Since then, the program has expanded and developed significant changes contributing its growth and efficiency. The Food Stamp Program is administered from the U.S Department of Agriculture through its Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). State agencies administer the program at state and local levels, including determination of eligibility, allotments, and distribution of benefits. The federal government pays for the amount of the benefit received, while states pay the costs of determining eligibility and distributing the stamps. The Food Stamp Program helped put food on the table for 7.3 million households and 17.2 million individuals each day in Fiscal Year 2000 and provided an average of $1.25 billion a month in benefits. The average monthly benefit was about $73 per person and almost $173 per household. In FY 2001 the appropriation was $20.1 billion in benefits. Eligible households are issued a monthly allotment of food stamps based on the Thrifty Food Plan, a low-cost model...

White boys trying to rap, it would never happen. In fact, one white man has made it to the top in a profession that is predominantly ruled by blacks. That man is Marshall Mathers, or you may have heard of him by his rap handle, Eminem. Eminem achieved this status using mass amounts of foul language and saying obscenities about other music artists. Eminem's word abuse has kept him at the top of the charts for the past year. MTV.com and RollingStone.com gave biographies on Eminem. Marshall Bruce Mathews III was born on October 17, 1973, in Kansas City Missouri. His childhood was not stable. He traveled the country with his mother living in different relatives homes until he ended up in Detroit at the age of twelve. Marshall competed in freestyle competitions in high school during lunchtime and decided to drop out in the ninth grade. He knew from that point on he wanted to rap and become a superstar. In 1996 he released his first album, Infinite. The album was not widely accepted and people did not know of the white kid trying to make it big in a black man's business. "Infinite was me trying to figure out how I wanted my rap style to be, how I wanted to sound on the mic and present myself," Eminem recalls. "It was a growing stage. I felt like Infinite was like a demo that just got pressed up." But the poor responses did not stop him. He immediately started working on The Slim Shady EP. Slim Shady is supposed to be Marshall's shocking side that talks about his life and his troubles. "I made some shit that I wanted to hear. The Slim Shady EP, I lashed out on everybody who talked shit about me." By representing himself as...

From a postcard showing the Banff Springs Hotel in the Canadian Rockies, postmarked 30th September, 1970. Found in a Cancer Research charity shop; Nottingham, England, October 2002: Mr & Mrs. G.E. Orton, 162 Kealeston Road, Leicester, England. Here I am in Vancouver having a wonderful time, I have spent 5 days with Peggy in Alberta. From here I go on to…[illegible] …and to Long Beach, Cal, to see Tom and Ann home. Tonight I am going to the C.B.C studio to see the production of a daily magazine programme with which a cousin (from Kettering) is connected. [Illegible signature) The solopsism of the postcard is shown here in all its bland glory; an annotated rendition of a journeyexperience stripped of any excitement or interest. Peggy, Tom and Ann (not to mention the cousin from Kettering) all get a name check in this hopelessly dull account. So, the postcard heads for Leicester, citing Vancouver, Alberta, California and Kettering in some mad congregation of disperate locales. The 'Here I am' that begins the postcard sees the narrative voice leaping around in space-time to be both here (Alberta) and here (Leicester)at once. What to do with the postcard once received? Return it to the sender when they're home, as a lover might do once the love affair is over? Stick it on the notice-board at home (probably in the kitchen)and admire/ignore the image of the Banff Springs Hotel? Maybe write one back, recounting the quotidian experiences 'back home' in Leicester? I imagine the recipients (Mr. & Mrs. G. E. Orton) to be mildly interested in [illegible signiture's]travails, reading the card over a toast and tea breakfast, remarking on the 'coincidence' of the cousin in Kettering (dull, known, parochial) being involved in a CBC production (unknown, (good)foreign and exotic, when in fact it is not coincidental, but entirely incidental....

A number of key features and concepts affected France at the beginning of the 20th century. Some of them strengthened France as a nation, while others significantly weakened her. As it would be almost impossible to discuss all of them I will just briefly talk about those features and concepts that made the biggest mark in France. These include imperialism, militarism, nationalism, technological change and aggression and war. Most of these concepts and features were integrated, meaning that the rise of one issue led to the rise of another. For example the rise of nationalism resulted in the rise of militarism, as the French felt that they should unite in their bid to get revenge on Germany. Nationalism also resulted in imperialism as the French put their interests first and disregarded the needs of other nations. Imperialism affected France at the beginning of the century in positive and negative ways. It opened up opportunities that otherwise would never have existed, such as the building of the Suez Canal, which was to give France an advantage over Britain by providing them with a shipping route from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. Imperialism also provided France with a new source for markets and resources. On the negative side imperialism created tensions between France and the other powers, that by the beginning of the century, were threatening peace in Europe. It created a number of disputes over land, in particular with Germany, which had joined the 'scramble for Africa' after France and the other powers. Militarism was also an important concept in France at the beginning of the 20th century. This was largely due to the Franco-Prussian war in 1870-71, which was the war that unified Germany and created a change in the balance of power in Europe. The war was relatively easily won...

Today, the security council still represents the Global System in 1945. The five emerging superpowers after WWII include France, the United States, Britain, Russia, and China. These are considered the permanent members on the council and can veto any resolution or act that the council tries to pass. There is much controversy over the permanent members of the Security Council. There have been several recent proposals by Thomas L. Friedman to replace France with India as a permanent member on the council. Friedman argues that India is a bigger democracy, biggest Hindu nation, and second largest Islamic nation in the world. France, however, wants to hold on to their permanent member status where they can veto anything they don't like. Many countries do not like the current role of the United States in the UN. Every time an opinion has split between the US and the UN, the argument has been to declare the whole United Nations dysfunctional. The US is also notorious for bullying weaker countries and hijacking the agenda. France has also been notorious for vetoing and conflicting resolutions just to show their independence from the United States. France would like to see a lesser role for the United States as a hegemonic leader, and more cooperation in the overall security council on decisions. France would also like to keep their current powerful position in the UN. To this point, France is essentially interested in incorporating more permanent members, however, they are still reluctant to give them veto power as well....

Growing up is a major part of everyone's life. People learn life lessons from getting older and experiencing life at its best and worst; however the most important lessons of life can be learned at these times. Stop Time, a memoir of Frank Conroy's life, uses a creative style of writing to get the readers attention. Frank Conroy wrote his autobiography in the style of a very descriptive and eventful story, unlike the stereotypical chronological list of events that many autobiographical authors use. Conroy chose to use his most memorable experiences and mold them into a story of his childhood. Childhood is the most important part of a persons life because the events that happen at this time sets up what people will be like when they grow up. Conroy uses 1st person throughout the novel to bring a sense of warmth and closeness to the main character, Frank. The story allows the readers to experience all that Frank experiences from his childhood to becoming a young college man. Frank Conroy is a young boy at the beginning of the story who seems to take every event in his life for what it is. The story begins with Frank standing by his father's side at his deathbed. Frank is definitely bothered by the entire situation because it seems as though he and his father were very close, however this is merely an assumption because the book never goes into detail of Frank's and his father's relationship. This event was really a reality check for Frank because it reminds him not to take life for granted. Conroy does a really impeccable job at describing the scene with his words. He makes the situation so crystal clear that the reader feels as if they are standing beside the father's bed-side too. Frank and...

The New Dollars and Dreams and Income Inequality Since the 1970s income inequality in the United States has grown significantly. In The New Dollars and Dreams, Frank Levy argues that this widening gap among Americans has occurred for several reasons. All together, Levy presents four powerful arguments that help guide his reader to a deeper understanding of our current economic income situation. These arguments are centered on skill bias in current markets, restructuring of firms and businesses, market structures and distribution of earnings, geographical changes in income distribution and their affect on the nature of income inequality and, finally, the current state of American welfare institutions (Levy 5). Ultimately, Levy feels that the government can do a better job of providing equal opportunity for all members of society and protecting individuals who are victims of economic change. First of all, it is important to recognize that our current economy has a much larger skill bias than it did fifty years ago. Levy identifies this primary economic difference as a precursor to many later arguments in the book: "… the 1950s economy was not skill biased: Low skilled workers displaced in one industry could get good jobs in another industry and so incomes automatically grew throughout the distribution" (Levy 3). Between 1979 and 1996, however, skill bias increased significantly in the job market. Most of this change was attributed to new developments in market technology, which created a higher demand for skilled workers. [The net effect of this job bias was an increase in the number of jobs in the upper and lower income range.] In addition, restructuring of businesses and firms in the 1980's in response to government deregulation also contributed to unequal income distribution (Levy 75). Firms fired thousands of employees, closed many existing plants, and opened up new plants using...

The twentieth century was full of new ideas and inventions. Henry Ford mass produced automobiles within the price range of the average man. Thomas Edison created a machine that made it possible to show motion pictures in movie theaters. Hot air balloons were seen in great numbers over the cities of America. Every field of science was making advances. Architecture, however, still lagged behind. Thousands of new buildings were constructed across America. These new buildings resembled an architectural style over a thousand years old. Many American colleges and universities still taught the architectural designs of the ancient Greeks and Romans. One voice cried out for a new concept in architecture. One man was making a serious, concerted effort to bring to America a new style, a new idea, a new truth - an architecture suited to the terrain and temperament of America. This man was Frank Lloyd Wright. Through his innovative designs, concepts, and love of nature, Frank Lloyd Wright became a leader in the architectural field by spawning a new organic style of architecture. Starting in 1893, Frank Lloyd Wright created a new style of houses for the Midwest. Following his idea of organic architecture, Wright designed the first "Prairie Houses." "Organic Simplicity" Wright once defined as the concept that "a building should fit into the natural balance of its location." Wright believed that a building should be constructed from materials native to the land around it, free of excessive ornamentation unrelated to its function, and to be part of the land on which it was built. Prairie houses were modeled after the flat, horizontal plains of the Midwest. These houses had only a single floor with no attic or basement, in order to imitate the horizontal lines of the plains....

What led Frank Lloyd Wright to become recognized as the greatest American Architect of the twentieth century? Born in 1867 in Richland Center, Wisconsin of Welsh heritage his idealistic mother Anna Lloyd Jones Wright and her family were committed Unitarians. They had the greatest influence on his early life. It is said that Anna Lloyd–Jones placed pictures of great buildings in young Frank's nursery as part of training him from the earliest possible moment as an architect. His father, William Carey Wright, was a musician and a preacher. In his mothers honor he changed his middle name to hers. When Frank was twelve his family settled in Madison Wisconsin where he attended Madison High School. During summers spent on his Uncle James Lloyd Jones' farm in Spring Green, Wisconsin. It was there that Wright first began to realize his dream of becoming an architect. In 1885, he left Madison without graduating high school to work for Allan Conover, the Dean of the University of Wisconsin's Engineering Department. Wright spent two semesters studying civil engineering before moving to Chicago in 1887. In Chicago, he worked for architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee; Wright drafted the construction of his first building, the Lloyd–Jones family chapel, also known as Unity Chapel. One year later, he was hired on as a draftsman in the firm of Adler and Sullivan, directly under Louis Sullivan. At the time the firm was designing Chicago's Auditorium Building. Wright eventually became the chief draftsman, and also the man in charge of the firms' residential designs. Under Sullivan whom Wright called "Lieber Meister" (beloved master), Wright began to develop his own architectural ideas. Wright adapted Sullivan's idea "Form follows function" to his own revised theory of "Form and Function are one." It was Sullivan's belief that American architecture should be based on American function, not European...

Benjamin Franklin asserts in his Autobiography that anyone can justify their actions through reasoning. He uses an example in which he juxtaposes two of his beliefs: one, that it is unjust to eat fish because you are killing something unprovoked, two, that it is fine, because in nature there is to be a food chain to sustain one another. He states: "if you eat one another, I don't see why we mayn't eat you," referring to the morality of eating fish. However, he also states: "taking of fish as a kind of unprovoked murder, since none of them had or ever could do us any injury that might justify the slaughter." For example, on the issue of the current war with Iraq, the US justifies its actions by saying that the inspectors don't work, and that Iraq must be forced to disarm. While on the other hand, other nations such as France can justify their standpoint by saying that inspectors do work and war is not the answer. Franklin makes a powerful statement, which is reflected in today's world's abundance of self-justification and self-delusion. Let's take an argument between mother and son for example: the son, wanting to do what he wants will always be able to come up with convincing reasons to justify what he wants to do, the mother on the other hand, can similarly always come up with reasons why he should not do what he wants to do. Your reasoning is driven by your beliefs. Franklin makes a very valid assertion in his Autobiography of the ability to justify one's actions through reasoning, no matter what the actions are. Franklin shows that starting from the same point, with reasoning, you can reach two very different end points....

Frederick Douglass was a man who was born into slavery. His mistress taught him how to read, because she never had a slave before. Frederick Douglass describes her as "a woman of the kindest heart and finest feelings." All this had changed when her husband found out that his wife was teaching the slave how to read. He told his wife that if she gives him an inch, he will take an ell, and that reading would only make him discontented and unhappy. After some time, all of what the master had said, became true. Frederick Douglass described learning the abc's from his mistress was the inch, and now he has taken the ell. He would take lessons from his white friends outside, and paid them with bread. Sometimes he would challenge them by saying that he writes better than them. He would write what he knows and whatever the other boys wrote, he studied it. After reading anything he could, he gained knowledge about slavery and how immoral it was. He felt sick at the knowledge he had gained, and for knowing his unfortunate position. He wished to die. His constant thinking about his position tormented him. He noticed that what his master had said to his wife came true. "As I writhed under it, I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out." He learned to read and write, and there was no going back. He couldn't help but notice the evil of slavery and its consequences all around him. Douglass also notes how his mistress became a different person, and uses her...

Ever since it was founded Waitakere City has been called 'The Gem' of Auckland City. It is a role model for other cities wanting to represent New Zealand's clean and green identity. Although most people don't realize, it is one of the world's most beautiful cities which is why I selected Waitakere City as an aspect of living in New Zealand. I have mainly focused on Waitakere City's contribution to New Zealand's natural environment. Waitakere city plays an important part in the conservation of New Zealand's environment. I have found information from the internet, local newsletters and council based newsletters that there are various groups within the community which aim to protect and conserve the local wildlife and fauna. Various projects are being undertaken by these groups. Some of which include, 'war of weeds' (a project to eliminate infested areas of bush), The Green Network and Operation Spring Clean (This is the residents of Waitakere city joining together and tidying up the local areas including Titirangi, Piha and Karekare beaches, Te Pai, Cranwell and Parrs Parks and many other main roads, beaches and reserves) so Waitakere City doesn't just look after the environment and wildlife, but gets the local residents, schools and the rest of the community involved in conserving New Zealand's natural environment. Waitakere City represents New Zealand's clean and green identity in a whole range of ways. I gathered information from local newsletters, residents, websites and pamphlets about the city. More than 95% of the Waitakere Ecological District is covered in Vegetation, which I believe is more than sufficient for the green aspect. And representing the clean aspect is the local communities, with groups such as the Keep Waitakere Beautiful Trust, Kiwi Clean-up Crew and many more. The city is regularly cleaned and kept in tip top condition at all...

Auschwitz - The Death Camp Auschwitz, or Auschwitz-Birkenau, is the best-known of all the Nazi death camps, and has come to symbolize the Holocaust itself. Adolf Hitler Hitler's father was an Austrian civil servant, born illegitimate as Alois Schicklgruber. Hitler's father died when he was 13. At 13 Hitler was a lively and artistic but he had a need for recognition. For Hitler there was a lot to avenge. The Vienna Academy of Fine Arts twice would not admit him as an apprentice painter. He then decided to become an architect, but he was unqualified for further study in this field. These rejections were made worse by the death of his mother, Kl ara. During his lifetime, Hitler was very secretive about his backround. He rejected relatives who tried to approach him. One of the first things he did after taking over Austria was to have a survey carried out of the little farming village of Dollerscheim where his father had been born. He had the inhabitants evacuated and the entire village demolished. Even the graves in the cemetery where his grandmother had been buried were unrecognisable. In early 1914 Adolf was rejected by the Austrian army as " unfit for combatant and auxiliary duties, too weak. Unable to bear arms." But at the beginning of World War I he was issued a uniform and sent into the war. Even there he seemed to be different from everyone else. Another member of the army remebered Hitler as " this white crow among us that didn't go along with us when we damned the war to hell." In France Hitler distinguished himself under fire. Surprisingly thanks to the initiative of a jewish officer, Hitler was awarded the Iron cross, First Class. After the war Hitler joined a new and violently anti-semitic group, which became the Natiolist socialist German...

This was 1837 from there he got a white collar job much like that of Chris fairly in Tommy boy if he was competent. He of course toured the factory many times and even the surrounding area an amazing feat since he lived there. While touring the streets he noticed that life kind of sucked for the working-class. It was here that he started the writing of his numerous papers articles and literature. While doing this he was thinking "hey what if the working class like rose up and fought for there rights but how, I know socialism!" but he knew the only way they could get socialism to even be considered would be with political power and they had none. Since quote "class struggle will only end when you destroy class and the idea of private property. Both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are famous psychoanalysists with unique approaches to personality. At one point they shared many of the same theories and had a deep friendship. In fact, Jung was to be heir to Freud's position as president of the International Psychoanalytic Association. However, Jung developed several new theories and disagreements with Freud. After years of friendship the pair parted in 1913. There were three main areas of personality which Jung disagreed with Freud on--the role of sexuality, temporal forces that influence personality, and the unconscious.
