Monetary policy affects the economic and financial decisions of virtually all of us from workers to borrowers to investors (Rukeyser 105). Louis Rukeyser wrote, If we want monetary policy to play its proper role in a true national economic reconstruction, the authentic task is to get the Fed to stop bouncing like a Chinese Ping-Pong ball, switching every few months between the inflationary effect of pumping far too much money into the economy and cramping, recessionary effect of supplying far to little (Rukeyser 104). And, because the US is the largest economy in the world, its monetary policy also has significant economic and financial effects on other countries. The object of monetary policy is to influence the performance of the economy, as reflected in such factors as inflation, economic output, and employment. It does so by affecting demand. Most people are familiar with the fiscal policy tools that affect demand, such as taxes and government spending. Less familiar is monetary policy; it is conducted by the Federal Reserve System, the nation's central bank, and it influences demand mainly by raising and lowering short-term interest rates. The Federal Reserve System (the Fed) is the nation's central bank. It was established by an Act of Congress in 1913 and consists of the seven members of the Board of Governors in Washington, DC and twelve Federal Reserve District Banks. Congress structured the Fed to be independent within the government. What that means is although the Fed I accountable to Congress, it is insulated from day-to-day political pressures. This reflects the conviction held both the US and in many other countries that the people who control the country's money supply should be independent of the people who frame the government's spending decisions. Most studies of central bank independence rank the Fed among the most...

Comparison of United States, United Kingdom, and Chinese Accounting Systems, Accounting Standards, Accounting Practices This report discusses the accounting practices of the following countries U.K, U.S.A and China. An analysis of these different accounting systems will be conducted on issues such as the growth and background, social, economic and fiscal pressures that have led to each nations current characteristics. Concluding on the direction each nations accounting systems and practices seem to be heading towards. Introduction The main characteristics of U.K accounting is that it is highly dominated by organised accounting profession, which only relate to limited liability companies, no other such entity. A separate fiscal accounting has been developed entirely from commercial accounting. Public sector in the U.K follows its own different rules in accounting. U.K was one of the initial and first countries in the world to develop and have Companies acts containing provisions and also one of the first professional accounting bodies was established in the U.K. Professional accountants and company law play a key role in dominating the U.K corporate financial reporting and play a significant influence varying from external and domestic factors. Britain's financial market is structured around a "capital financial market based financial system" where the stock market funds large scale businesses, trading securities and pricing role. The stock exchange and taxation system have very little influence in financial reporting. Having said that, the stock market has involvement in developing financial reporting standards for listed companies. Although U.K seems to have developed its own companies act and regulations, it still has received indirect foreign influence from member states of the European union through EU directives and from U.S.A with their new accounting standards. Financial reporting and accounting in the U.S.A seems to have a large and dominant influence on accounting in the world today with its largely consistent standards...

D-Day has always been a celebrated day throughout the entire world in which the Western Allied forces were finally able to break Hitler grasp on Europe. The landings that occurred on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944 was a great military victory at the cost of many lives. But the motives behind D-Day are unclear. Why did Britain want to go through Italy and did everything in its power to stop the invasion of Normandy? Why did the US promise Stalin that a second front would be open? The motives behind Operation Overlord are more because of political power play between the allied nations rather than opening a decisive military front. The most remarkable aspect of World War II was how America committed itself to the battles occurring in Europe and had not concentrated on Japan, the United States' main aggressor. It was the Americans who were impatient to confront the German army on the continent while the British were haunted by the deepest misgivings about doing so. ""Why are we doing this?" cried Winston Churchill in a bitter moment of depression about Operation OVERLORD in February 1944, which caused him a spasm of enthusiasm for an alternative Allied landing in Portugal. 'I am very uneasy about the whole operation," wrote the Chief of the Imperial general Staff, Sir Alan Brooke, as late as June 5, 1944. "At the best, it will come very short of the expectation the bulk of the people, namely all those who know nothing about its difficulties. At its worst, it may well be the most ghastly disaster of the whole war,"" (Ambrose, 56). It seems that the British favored opening a second front to relieve some of the pressure from Russia, but did not agree with the second front being opened in the...

Larry Henagin term paper English George Orwell's novel, 1984 serves as a warning for us to be on guard against the intrusive power of government and the potential growth of totalitarianism. Therefore, with the recent collapse of communism and the rearrangement of European states, it is reasonable to state that 1984 is still relevant today. A number of critics have not only praised Orwells's novel but also recognized its importance for today. 1984 enables students to comprehend the oppression created by past totalitarian regimes. In the Novel Mein Kampf by Hitler, he stated "The individual should accept his personal insignificance, dissolve himself in a higher power and then feel proud in participating in the strength and glory of this higher power." Hitler believes an individual should give up their freedoms and devote themselves to their government. Lenin stated in his speech to the commissars of education in 1923 "Give us the child for eight years, and it will be a bolshevist forever." Lenin believes that he could brainwash a child into believing anything he wanted the child to believe if he was given enough time. These statements by Hitler and Lenin demonstrate the dangers of a totalitarian system of government. J.B. Watson believed that he could train a healthy child to become anything he wanted them to if he was given a place which would allow him to do so. (J.B. Watson, 1926) This is why it is important to be aware of the dangers of a totalitarian government and the problems it may cause. According to Marion Lewenstein we must monitor our government, otherwise we may lose our democracy and gain a totalitarian government. Then one day our society may become like Oceania's society. (Lewenstein, 1983) It is in our own best interest to prevent our government from turning into a totalitarian. We, as...

For my term paper, I researched on Cyber Terrorism. I believe that Cyber Terrorism is a big problem in our society and may even be a worldwide problem for all humanity today. I want to do my term paper on Cyber Terrorism because I had some personal experience with this sort of terrorism. About a two years ago, I encountered a Hacker on America Online. I opened an unknown message in my mailbox that was titled “Free Nude Teens”. Then about a couple weeks later, we received all sorts of bills that had to be paid. My father received bills for many different things such as electronics, clothes, and other items that had been purchased under our account on the Internet. My father was so pissed off because he thought that my brothers or I had purchased all those items. So we called the Company and found that our computer had been hacked into. And the so called hacker purchased items on our account number. And we found that the hacker gained entry by a message that I had opened . So we ended up paying only a thousand dollars out of almost six-thousand dollars worth of goods purchased on America Online. I want to do my research paper on Cyber Terrorism because I want to stress to people that this is a big problem and will become worse in the future since everything is being done in Cyber Space these days. In this research paper, I will prove that hackers gain power and publicity with crimes they commit through cyber space. And it is easy for even amateur hackers to gain information and money from powerful organization without any detection or suspicion. Hacking is also a costly and destructive force for people in Cyber Space. Cyber Terrorism is such a...

Many companies devote significant resources to developing a stock option plan to compete in today's labor market. In addition, many companies believe these plans will motivate employees to behave like owners. The research and experience show that employee ownership can have a significant impact on corporate performance and employee motivation, but that ownership alone is not enough. The real impact occurs in those companies that create an environment in which employees are given the tools, training, and encouragement to become more involved as owners in a culture of lasting innovation. Can employee stock options have this impact? Are stock options an effective tool to build an ownership culture? What are the considerations? What are the barriers? What are companies doing to get optionees thinking about the long-term and acting like owners? This meeting is intended as a forum to explore these questions and issues. Speakers will include representatives from local companies and noted experts on ownership culture.
